Coliform Bacteria

Their presence in surface waters indicates that disease-causing organisms (pathogens) may be present. FDEP rule states that MPN (most probable number) shall not exceed Ten Percent Threshold Value of 130 for Enterococci or 410 for Escherichia coli in 10% or more of the samples during any 30-day period.

Microscopic Examination for Algae Blooms

Test for waters showing a recent change in color or apperance due to algae blooms. Water can look green, blue-green, green-brown, orange or red. Blooms are formed by microoscopic organisms, so no leaves or plant material are distiguishable in the sample. Scum, bubbling or spit-like floating foam can be present.

Total Nitrogen

Excess nitrogen can cause overstimulation of growth of aquatic plants and algae and cause problems like fish kills. It is one of the most severe water quality problems facing the State. The Total Nitrogen Nutrient Threshold¹ in the Lee County Peninsular Region is 1.54 mg/L.

Total Phosphorus

Excess phosphorus can cause overstimulation of growth of aquatic plants and algae and cause problems like fish kills. It is one of the most severe water quality problems facing the State. The Total Phosphorus Nutrient Threshold¹ in the Lee County Peninsular Region is 0.12 mg/L.
